Asians New to Netflix: Halloween Edition

Asians New to Netflix is a monthly column introducing the new live-action movies and television shows which air next month on Netflix and feature Asian American actors.

It’s October! What better way to celebrate the month of Halloween than with a horror movie? That’s right - next month, there’s only one new Netflix live action offering that features an Asian American character. And it’s none other than a Chucky movie.

Is it a little depressing to find that there’s only one? Yes. Did I read more about the Chucky series than I wanted to, in order to write this post? Also, yes.

Cult of Chucky (2017)

Available October 3

Directed by: Don Mancini

Screenplay by: Don Mancini

Plot: Chucky returns to terrorize his human victim, Nica. Meanwhile, the killer doll has some scores to settle with his old enemies, with the help of his former wife, Tiffany (IMDB).

Disclaimer: I’ve never watched any of the movies in the Chucky/Child’s Play franchise, and I don't plan to (I'm deathly afraid of all horror movies).

Cult of Chucky brings back the evil doll Chucky, along with his former wife Tiffany, who was previously trapped within a doll but now possesses the body of an actress named Jennifer Tilly - played by real-life actress Jennifer Tilly. The American-Canadian has Chinese, Irish, First Nation, and Finnish ancestry, and is known for the Chucky franchise (as Tiffany/Jennifer Tilly), Bound (Violet), Monsters, Inc (Celia); and Liar, Liar (Samantha Cole). She has appeared in four of the seven Chucky movies: Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, and Cult of Chucky.

You can watch Cult of Chucky on Netflix starting October 3.

Are you a diehard fan of the Chucky series? Depressed about the lack of Asian American representation onscreen? Let us know what you think on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, and tell us if we missed anything - I would love to be proved wrong!
